A special workshop was conducted for music students in Galle at the Rippon Girls’ College, Galle, by our Chief Conductor and Associate Chief Conductor. This marked the inauguration of the education program of the society. Over 70 other students were also in attendance from Richmond College, Mahinda College and Sanghamitta Girls' School, Galle and the workshop focused on the fundamentals of ensemble performance

The Gustav Mahler Society of Colombo opened its Educational Programme for the 2019/20 Season with a workshop for Wind and Percussion students is Galle. This workshop was held on the 2nd October 2019 at the Mount Calvary High School, Galle. Over 100 students were in attendance from Galle, Ambalangoda and Elpitiya

The programme consisted of Solfège training, short lectures and demonstrations by our Principal players on their instruments followed by training sessions for Flute/Piccolo, Clarinet, Saxophone, Trumpet, Trombone, Euphonium and Percussion students. The programme concluded with an introduction to Gustav Mahler and his music. The students also listened to excerpts from all Mahler Symphonies and song cycles

This workshop was conducted by the Principal players of the Gustav Mahler Orchestra, Ananda Premasiri (Principal Clarinet), Prasanna Kumara (Principal Trombone), Shakya Abeytunge (Associate Principal Trumpet), our Chorus Director Rachel Halliday and our Chief Conductor Srimal Weerasinghe.

Southern Province Representative of GMSC, Mr Damith Ganhewa who is also an instructor of Several Wind Bands in Galle took charge and helped us organise this workshop. Rev. Bernard Jayasinghe Principal of Mount Calvary High School for supporting immensely by providing us the school premises for the workshop.

Barbora Valiukeviciute conducted a special workshop for violin students and teachers in Galle.

Our soloist Barbora Valiukeviciute conducted 10 hours of masterclasses for violin students in Colombo. The Colombo Cultural Hub Trust supported the Gustav Mahler Society of Colombo to make this project a success.

Special workshop by the Gustav Mahler Society was held for the String Students of the University of the Visual & Performing Arts by Violin soloist Barbora Valiukeviciute.

In light of the circumstances prevalent due to the Coronavirus pandemic, the Gustav Mahler Society of Colombo offered FREE Online Lessons to aid music students who were in need of lessons but were confined to their homes, with no access to quality material. Lessons were offered for singing, and all orchestral string and wind instruments. The British Soprano Barbara Segal, the Chief Conductor of the GMSC Srimal Weerasinghe and the Lithuanian Solo Violinist Barbora Valiukeviciute generously carried out the project.

The Principal Brass Players of the Gustav Mahler Orchestra of Colombo, Naveen Fernando (Trumpet), Vidhurinda Samaraweera (French Horn), Prasanna Kumara (Trombone) conducted lectures on their respective instruments covering important aspects such as the history of the instrument, the manufacturing process, parts and their improvements, techniques and essential skills, special effects and other fun facts and trivial information. The panel discussion was broadcasted live to the public on YouTube. Brass players from all corners of the country now have access to our video library to find remedies to a wide range of issues relating to instruments and ensemble playing.

The lecture was successfully held on 04th August, streamed to the public via YouTube. The discussion ranged from origins, construction, physics to string writing in solo and orchestral repertoire. Hosted by the Principal players; Sachiththa Fernando (Concertmaster), P.G.Dharmasiri (Viola), Saranga Cooray (Cello) and Andrea Leitan (Double Basses) moderated by the conductors of the Gustav Mahler Orchestra of Colombo. The lecture was conducted by the Principal Percussionist of the Gustav Mahler Orchestra Kasun Sanjay and P.G.Dharmasiri (Principal Viola) moderated by the conductors of the GMSC. All about Woodwind Instruments in the Orchestra was presented by the Principal Players of the Gustav Mahler Orchestra of Colombo; Lashikala Hettiarachchi (Principal Flute), Minuka Jayawardena (Principal Oboe), Uthsara Malaweera Arachchi (Principal Bassoon) and was moderated by the conductors of the GMSC. The panel discussion was streamed LIVE on YouTube owing to the pandemic conditions. Woodwind players from all corners of the country now have access to our video library to find remedies to a wide range of issues.

The GMSC organised and streamed this workshop LIVE on YouTube as an aid for students taking Western Music as a subject at the GCE Ordinary Level Examination in 2020. The aim was to supply students with a sufficient and cohesive repository on the necessary knowledge in music given the difficulty arising out of the unprecedented pandemic situation dampening the ordinary learning systems. The lecture was conducted by the Chief Conductor, Srimal Weerasinghe.
