Supporting local musicians is of vital importance to the GMSC. A sum of the profits earned by the GMSC is put towards conducting educational workshops to introduce and encourage classical music especially at the school level in Sri Lanka. The society has held educational workshops for students in Galle and Colombo. The workshops were conducted by several principal players and conductors of the GMSC as well as foreign soloist Barbora Valiukeviciute.
A special workshop was conducted for music students in Galle at the Rippon Girls’ College, Galle, by our Chief Conductor and Associate Chief Conductor. This marked the inauguration of the education program of the society. Over 70 other students were also in attendance from Richmond College, Mahinda College and Sanghamitta Girls' School, Galle and the workshop focused on the fundamentals of ensemble performance
The Gustav Mahler Society of Colombo opened its Educational Programme for the 2019/20 Season with a workshop for Wind and Percussion students is Galle. This workshop was held on the 2nd October 2019 at the Mount Calvary High School, Galle. Over 100 students were in attendance from Galle, Ambalangoda and Elpitiya
The programme consisted of Solfège training, short lectures and demonstrations by our Principal players on their instruments followed by training sessions for Flute/Piccolo, Clarinet, Saxophone, Trumpet, Trombone, Euphonium and Percussion students. The programme concluded with an introduction to Gustav Mahler and his music. The students also listened to excerpts from all Mahler Symphonies and song cycles
This workshop was conducted by the Principal players of the Gustav Mahler Orchestra, Ananda Premasiri (Principal Clarinet), Prasanna Kumara (Principal Trombone), Shakya Abeytunge (Associate Principal Trumpet), our Chorus Director Rachel Halliday and our Chief Conductor Srimal Weerasinghe.
Southern Province Representative of GMSC, Mr Damith Ganhewa who is also an instructor of Several Wind Bands in Galle took charge and helped us organise this workshop. Rev. Bernard Jayasinghe Principal of Mount Calvary High School for supporting immensely by providing us the school premises for the workshop.
Barbora Valiukeviciute conducted a special workshop for violin students and teachers in Galle.
Our soloist Barbora Valiukeviciute conducted 10 hours of masterclasses for violin students in Colombo. The Colombo Cultural Hub Trust supported the Gustav Mahler Society of Colombo to make this project a success.

In light of the circumstances prevalent due to the Coronavirus pandemic, the Gustav Mahler Society of Colombo offered FREE Online Lessons to aid music students who were in need of lessons but were confined to their homes, with no access to quality material. Lessons were offered for singing, and all orchestral string and wind instruments. The British Soprano Barbara Segal, the Chief Conductor of the GMSC Srimal Weerasinghe and the Lithuanian Solo Violinist Barbora Valiukeviciute generously carried out the project.
